Throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island the majority of car accidents, auto-pedestrian accidents and auto-bicycle accidents are caused by distracted drivers. When discussing distracted driving, we tend to focus on device and smartphone use, but one of the oldest types of driver distraction is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately one-third of all car accident fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers (with blood alcohol concentrations [BACs] of .08 of higher).
Drunk Driving In Recent Local News
There was a dangerous inter-state police chase through RI and MA this week involving a 30 year old woman from Warren, RI who was driving drunk. The chase began when she fled in her vehicle after being pulled over by an officer in Warwick, RI. The chase had briefly stopped in Cranston, then picked back up in East Providence and continued through Seekonk, Rehoboth, Warren and Barrington before entering Swansea where the car came to a stop and the driver was placed under arrest for operating under the influence, assault and battery, as well as other offenses in multiple towns. One Swansea Police officer was struck by the drunk driver, but sustained no serious injuries. Fortunately there were no other injuries or accidents caused by this chase, but it stands as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or any other substance.
Driving Under The Influence Can Lead To Catastrophic Injury & Accidental Death
Drunk driving accidents have the potential to be deadly because the driver operating under the influence may not react, brake or steer clear before impact. For the victim of a drunk driving car accident the damages can vary from dashboard injuries, whiplash and concussions, to more serious injuries like loss of limbs, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or spinal cord injuries which will change their life forever. As stated before, drunk driving is responsible for one-third of all car accident fatalities.
