Providence, RI — For the second year in a row, the car accident fatality numbers from the National Safety Council’s (NSC) annual report are soaring and Rhode Island is not an exception this time around. The number of car crashes resulting in death and personal injury throughout Providence and all of Rhode Island can and must be decreased, and we can only hope that this report and others like it will get the attention they deserve.

U.S. Traffic Fatalities Rise For the Second Straight Year

It’s definitely worth noting that 2016 may have been the deadliest year on the roads since 2007! The NSC‘s annual traffic fatality report estimates that 40,000 people died in fatal car accidents in 2016. This marks the second year in a row, marking a 6% increase from 2015 and a 14% increase from 2014. This marks the most dramatic two-year escalation of car accident fatalities in 53 years.

Rhode Island & Massachusetts’ Region Sees Increase

Though the state of Rhode Island celebrated a decrease in fatalities of 9% in 2015 (bucking the national increase), fatalities this past year increased 20% in Region 1 (which comprises Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont). A small part of this can be attributed to our phenomenal 2015 numbers, but the majority is most likely attributed to factors like distracted driving, speeding and driving under the influence.

What Can We Do To Make Rhode Island Roads Safer?

Working to decrease traffic fatalities in Rhode Island is an ongoing task. Our government needs to continue to work with the state police to educate and crack down on these deadly behaviors. As citizens we must stay on top of supporting bills and campaigns which educate our fellow Rhode Island friends and family members to avoid any driving behaviors which could lead to car accident fatalities. Individually, our best course of action is to be an aware, responsible driver, NEVER drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and avoid distracted driving.
