The National Safety Council, a nonprofit organization that works closely with federal auto-safety regulators has released their annual numbers for fatal car accidents for 2016 and it doesn’t look good. Fatal car crashes are soaring for the second year in a row nationally, and Massachusetts is no exception. In order to understand things a bit more locally, we’re going to look at some detailed data on traffic fatalities gathered between 1994 and 2014 from our own Fall River.

Some Basic Facts on Fatal Car Accidents in Fall River

There are many variables and factors around the causes of fatal car crashes. Throughout the 20 year period some different trends emerge. We’re going to bullet point a few of them for you:

  • The majority of these accidents occur throughout the summer months into September, with the latter being the highest. This can be attributed to everything from people being on vacation from work, to driving while under the influence.
  • Most fatal car accidents in Fall River tend to occur in the afternoon and evening hours.
  • Though we had zero pedestrian involved fatal accidents in multiple years, Fall River was higher than the state average in 1999 and 2012.
  • 2012 was the worst year for Fall River, with 9 motor vehicle accident fatalities, followed by 2005 with 8.

Some “Good” News for Fall River

For nearly every year, Fall River had fewer fatal car accidents than the Massachusetts average (per 100,000 population). 2012 was a particularly bad year however, where we peaked above the state average. We can also pat ourselves on the back for the most part when it comes to fatal drunk driving accidents. Fall River only crept above the Massachusetts average in this category in 1997 and 2000. More notable is that there were ZERO drunk driving fatalities in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2014. The best news could be that in the latter years of this data (2013, 2014) the numbers were trending downward. Let’s hope that this continues!
