The busy highways and city streets of cities in Southeastern Massachusetts like New Bedford, Fall River and Taunton see car accidents and fender benders every day. In a seemingly minor rear-end car accident the driver may feel fine initially and want rush through the paperwork and off to their next meeting. The next day they are feeling symptoms of whiplash or other injuries sustained in the accident.
What Is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by movement of the structures within the neck changing the normal curve of the upper back and neck. The sudden backward movement (extension) and forward movement (flexion) can cause the joints of the neck to be injured and can also cause the muscles and ligaments of the neck and upper back to be over-stretched. The neck is particularly vulnerable to this type of injury because of its ability to move in many directions.
Symptoms To Look Out For
You might walk away from being rear-ended feeling a little tight in the neck or headachy and attribute it to stress or shock. Though this could be the case, pay attention over the next hours or days to see if symptoms of whiplash begin to become evident. Symptoms can vary widely. Here are some common symptoms:
- Tightness or spasms of the muscles in the neck or upper back.
- Pain with movement of the neck, headache and dizziness.
- Difficulty swallowing and chewing and hoarseness.
- Abnormal sensations such as burning or tingling.
- Shoulder pain.
Always Get Checked Out By A Doctor
It can sometimes take days or even weeks for the true severity of your injury to come out. After a car accident, whether you are seeing immediate symptoms or not, you should always file a police report and get checked out by a doctor. They may take x-rays to rule out any bone fractures. A CT scan or MRI may also be done if there is concern of you having a herniated disc or other deeper injuries. These tests are better able to identify soft tissue injuries than plain radiographs.
