Car accidents, motorcycle accidents or any other accident involving a motor vehicle can cause a variety of serious personal injuries and even wrongful death. Every day in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, people are injured or killed in car accidents caused by distracted driving. It is common in a car crash to suffer injuries from impact with a part of the vehicle, or being hit by unsecured cargo or debris from the crash. These are some of the more common types of injury.
Common Injuries Caused by Motor Vehicle Accidents
Brain injuries – A blow to the head can damage the brain, and cause an injury known as traumatic brain injury (TBI). A TBI may be as mild as a concussion which would likely on its own after a few weeks of rest, or it can be a more severe injury impairing critical functions like speech, vision, concentration, memory and control over emotions. Brain injuries can be sneaky in that beyond any visible cuts or bruises on the head, and there may be no other signs of a brain injury. Your best bet is to ALWAYS get checked out by a doctor after any head trauma.
Neck and back injuries – The most common injury suffered in car accidents is whiplash. It occurs when the neck stretches and quickly snaps back into place due to an impact causing the car to either suddenly stop or accelerate. Whiplash can cause damage to the vertebrae, ligaments and disks, or the spinal cord itself. This can also result in paralysis or other loss of function in one or more limbs or other portions of the body. Beyond whiplash there are many less severe neck and back injuries which can cause chronic pain and discomfort, significantly reducing the injured party’s quality of life and ability to work
Contusions/ broken bones – Many injuries in car accidents are caused by smashing into or being crushed by part of the car. This can result in injuries ranging from contusions (bruises) to broken bones or multiple fractures in the legs, arms, ribcage, pelvis, etc.. Joints like knees and elbows are susceptible to breakage and tearing of cartilage if they are abruptly twisted or turned the wrong way.
Loss of limbs – In motorcycle accidents and more severe car accidents the victim may suffer a loss of one or more limbs due to being severed or crushed beyond repair. These are among the most life-changing injuries and the injured party must sue for compensatory damages to attempt to make themselves “whole” again and to cope with the injury for the rest of their life.
Loss of life / wrongful death – A motor vehicle accident may result in the wrongful death of one or more people. This is when a deceased person loses their life due to someone else’s recklessness and negligence, but the surviving family members have been directly impacted both emotionally and financially due to the death.
